SHAFTESBURY ANNOUNCES JOSHUA MILLARD’S FIRST STORE IN CARNABY

Shaftesbury announces the opening of tailor Joshua Millard’s first store in Carnaby at 1 Marlborough Court, contributing to the wide range of exciting independent brands in the Carnaby portfolio. The store is 435 sq ft and situated over 2 floors.

Samantha Bain-Mollison, Retail Director Shaftesbury: “We are delighted to announce that Joshua has opened the doors to his first stand alone store at 1 Marlborough Court. Having been awarded the residency through the Carnaby x London College of Fashion: Kingly Street Tailors competition, we are proud that Joshua has now upsized to his own space and we are looking forward to seeing what comes next for his business.”

Shaftesbury launched the initiative in partnership with London College of Fashion, UAL in 2019 to help young talent in British tailoring.

After entering the Carnaby x London College of Fashion: Kingly Street Tailors competition, Joshua was awarded a 2 year rent free space at the tailoring studios located at 26 Kingly Street, Carnaby. The initiative aims to invest in the next generation of talent by assisting them in the early stages of their business as well as offering a specialist programme of mentor support to help them on their journey.

Now, Joshua opens the doors of his new permanent store in Carnaby’s Newburgh Quarter, successfully upsizing into his own retail space. An essence of rural Dorset in Carnaby, Joshua Millard offers made-to-easure tailoring for women; each piece is carefully considered and constructed in-house by hand, using the finest British and Italian cloths. The collection reflects women who seek pieces with a wear and wear again appeal. Exclusive to the store, clients are given the opportunity to customise their made to measure piece, once they have selected their style from the cross seasonal range of silhouettes. His signature range features nuances of bygone heritage, tailored cuts, contemporary fabrics and shearling.

Joshua prides himself on collaborating with independent tailors, seamstresses and mills across the UK and Europe who embody the same values in regards to quality and ethical production. The concept of the store draws upon aspects of Millard’s upbringing on an organic sheep farm in Dorset. The store features natural materials, including rails that the tailor crafted himself from fallen ash trees. A portion of each sale is donated to PlantLife, a charity that promotes endangered wildflower growth in UK arable habitats.

Joshua Millard says: “I want the shop environment to echo the sensibilities of the British countryside through rich texture and materials, yet balanced with clean lines, palette and comfort. I’m grateful to Shaftesbury for giving me the opportunity to upsize my business and open my first store in Carnaby”.

Shaftesbury will continue the initiative to support young upcoming British tailors as they begin the process of offering two new London College of Fashion Graduate tailors the opportunity to work from 26 Kingly Street in September 2021.
